Two young boys, aged five and seven, were forced to live with their mother’s lifeless body for a week after she passed away from a suspected heart attack.
Police officers found the children trying to take care of themselves inside their Dallas home on Sunday. Their 71-year-old mother, Connie Taylor, was found dead inside their home.
According to reports, the elderly woman had officially adopted the kids last month after being their foster mom for some time.
Police discovered the body after authorities were called out to the home for a welfare check as the children failed to attend classes at their nearby elementary school.
As soon as the boys opened the door for police, they said that their mom ‘passed out’ on the floor and would not open her eyes.
The children said they had tried to use their mother’s phone to call but they could not unlock it. They were scared to go outside as they did not know their neighbors.
The young boys fended for themselves by eating food from the fridge and the pantry.
One neighbor said to DFW CBS: “They thought mum was asleep and the police officers were going to be able to wake her up.”
The children have been placed under child protective services.
The Forney Independent School District said the teachers were used to communicating with Taylor but when they couldn’t reach her, they immediately raised the alarm.
The district said in a statement: “We are so thankful that our teachers are building relationships with families to know something wasn’t right, and for our officers that check in our families.
“Our hearts break with the family, and we are keeping them close in our thoughts and prayers.”
