The youngest victim of coronavirus was buried by pallbearers who were wearing masks, gloves, and protective suits.
His six siblings and mother had to watch Ismail’s funeral online because the family had to stay at the home for self-isolation. Two of his other siblings show signs of the coronavirus disease.
Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab who was a thirteen-year-old from Brixton, South London, lost his life at the King’s College Hospital on Monday in the early hours.
In heartbreaking scenes at a burial site in Chislehurst, uncles, cousins, and other mourners who also wore the PPE clothes maintained a distance of 2 meters in order to observe the social distancing rules and watched silently as Ismail’s coffin was being lowered into the ground.
According to the Islamic traditions, the body is first taken to a mosque for special prayers.
However, due to the lockdown, Ismail was taken straight to the burial ground from the mortuary. His relatives and community feel sad that Ismail could not receive that traditional Muslim burial.
A relative said that Ismail’s siblings and mother were devastated as they were not allowed to attend the funeral and added that although they could see the burial through live video, their pain would not lessen.
Ismail’s relatives had been going to his house to pay respect but were not entering it and only expressing their grief by standing outside and conversing through the window.
In Britain, more than 60% who are severely affected by the coronavirus are sixty years and above but there is a growing and tragic number of young people contracting the disease and losing their lives to COVID-19.
This comes after the partner of Josh Youngman, who was a healthy twenty-six-year-old and died of coronavirus, urged young people to take the coronavirus pandemic seriously and warned that is it not only the vulnerable and the old who are at risk.
