‘Rarest’ Peter Rabbit 50p Coin Has Been Released Into Circulation In Britain


Some 400 rare Peter Rabbit 50p coins have gone into circulation and have become “Britain’s rarest coin.

” The coins were not officially released into circulation by the Royal Mint as they were released as commemorative ones earlier this year.

The 2019 coins are available to buy from the Royal Mint for $12.

Royal Mint stated: “The Peter Rabbit 2019 coin is a commemorative only coin. These will not be entering general circulation.”

A group called The Great British Coin Hunt is the mind behind the idea and the 400 coins are currently being distributed at various locations all over the UK, this is said to be completed by the end of the month.

Kellie from the Great British Coin Hunt team, said: “We are circulating the 2019 Peter Rabbit. We’re hoping we’re going to get 40 volunteers to help us around the country.”

“I’m in Devon this weekend visiting the family, so I’m circulating the coins around this area.”

The limited-edition coins depict characters from the author’s popular children’s story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The coins feature Peter sat upright, clutching his handkerchief in one paw and the other held up to his mouth.

The Royal Mint told The Sun website:  “These coins are brilliant un-circulated editions which means they won’t enter circulation and are intended as gifts and collectibles.”

“Occasionally brilliant un-circulated coins end up in change, but they do not count towards official circulating figures.”

According to Devon Live, ‘’from this month, the coins will be spent in coffee shops, parking meters and vending machines across the country, with 10 having already been circulated in the South West.’’

Every year since 2016, The Royal Mint has released a Peter Rabbit coin with different designs. The 2016 coins featured an up-close portrait of the character’s face. In 2017, another set of silver and colored edition coins were released, depicting the rabbit mid-run, and 2018 design featured a colorful Peter munching on a carrot.
