Former minister John Hayes says capital punishment Death Penalty “should be available to the courts” amid bloody crime wave.
Mr. Hayes used written parliamentary questions and has asked for the ‘potential merits’ of the death penalty to be reconsidered by the UK Parliament. He used the case of Westminster killer Khalid Masood to illustrate his point.
The terrorist, 53 years old, killed five people and injured fifty more in a terror attack outside the Palace of Westminster in March 2017.
He wrote to Lord Chancellor David Gauke to “make an assessment of the potential merits of bringing forward legislative proposals to reintroduce the death penalty to tackle violent crime.”
But justice minister Edward Argar said that the government “opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances and has no plans to reintroduce it.”
The statement was in response to Mr. Hayes suggesting hanging would have been the best punishment for the 53-year-old terrorist. The man was shot dead by a cop after he mowed down pedestrians in his vehicle before crashing it outside the palace grounds. He went on to fatally knife an unarmed cop.
Stressing that the UK is campaigning for the elimination of the death penalty, he continued: “There is no evidence that capital punishment acts as a deterrent to violent crime. Furthermore, the reintroduction of the death penalty would bring with it the very real risk that some innocent people would die.”
Mr. Haye’s remarks are prompted by the recent wave of violent crimes occurring over the country which has led to it being dubbed ‘Wild West Britain.’
Formerly an aide to David Cameron, Mr. Hayes told Lincolnshire Live: “We have got an issue in Britain with very serious crime.
“We have had a number of serious crimes, the murder rates increases and barely a week goes by without hearing about some horrific child murder or old people being attacked and killed.
“Many of my constituents say that’s partly because we don’t respond appropriately.’It seems to me there really needs to be a fitting punishment.”
