Once the MIL promised resources and gained the upper hand, she allegedly threatened the bride to cut off all funding unless she signed the controversial agreement.

According to the upset bride, neither she nor her husband understand what the mother is thinking or why she asked for something like that, especially since she previously expressed her wish to have grandchildren.

“My fiancé’s mother has been generous enough to foot the bill for the entire wedding since she’s mainly the one who wanted it to be a large affair anyway. I’ve let her have free reigns with the planning and she’s allowed to invite whoever she wants as I don’t have that many family members, and fiancé keeps his friend circle very small,” the woman wrote in her post.

“This wedding has gotten extremely expensive (in the hundred thousands), and while we are grateful, the fiancé and I were planning on eloping to begin with since we couldn’t afford it and had no desire to have a large celebration…

“I don’t know if the entire thing was a planned trap because initially I just assumed that it was normal for my fiancé’s family to have such elaborate celebrations. We thought his mother was just doing her part to impress her social circle (they keep up with the joneses) and didn’t want to take that away from her by eloping.”

After the bride’s plea for help, Reddit users quickly warned her against signing the contract and encouraged her to run as far away from her as possible.

As some readers suggested, the mother-in-law sounds like a cult member who is ready to do anything to have her way.

“She’s (losing) control. A lot of moms are fine until a major life change (puberty, moving out, marriage, first kid) shows that they are not in control anymore,” someone wrote.

“If I was in your shoes, and facing a narc (which you are), the answer is to not give them an inch. … just keep it completely unemotional and let her know that she is not an authority in your life, and she will not have any control over you.”
