Bride-to-be Kayleigh Brown and her friend, Harriot Woods saw smoke coming from a flat on their way back home and called 999.
Meanwhile, they started kicking at a back door after they heard a man shouting for help.
They managed to enter from the back door and found an elderly man who was shouting for help.
Ms. Woods said: “There was a lawnmower on the stairs and some golf clubs, which I threw to the bottom while Kayleigh was calling 999.”
They helped the man to come down the stairs and then took him out of the flat.
The elderly man told them that a seven-year-old girl was also upstairs. They again went inside but had to come outside after checking two rooms because they couldn’t breathe properly.
Firefighters arrived at the scene. However, they didn’t find anyone else in the flat.
The elderly man was then taken to the hospital and the two girls are now planning to visit him at home.
Kayleigh said about the incident: “We were walking past and we could see smoke coming out the window of this flat. I phoned 999 and Harriot kicked the door down and we managed to get him out safely.”
“It was filled with smoke. We had to help him down the stairs. ‘He was an elderly gentleman and he went to hospital – we don’t know how long he was in the smoke for.”
Ms. Woods added: “We’d had a few to drink but instinct just kicked in. I assume anyone would have done what we did. At the end of the day, he’s someone’s family.”
Stefan Rider, from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, praised the women for their brave act and said: “These women saved his life. If they hadn’t stepped in this story could have had a tragic ending. They deserve recognition for their bravery and everyone is thankful for their actions.”
