Breonna Taylor’s grieving mother broke down in tears after she was told that police officers wouldn’t be charged with killing her daughter.
Tamika Palmer wept after receiving the news from Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron two minutes before it was announced.
One officer would be charged but not for killing Palmer’s daughter. The announcement sparked protests not only in Louisville but across the country.
Activist Christopher said to CNN that there was ‘a lot of sadness and weeping’ when Taylor’s family was told. He had also seen ‘a mother in excruciating pain.’
Palmer was with her other daughter Bianca Austin, sister Juniyah Palmer, and family lawyers when they were informed of the grand jury’s decision.
The family was awarded a $12 million settlement, six months after Taylor was shot by a Louisville cop who burst into her apartment.
Palmer said that the settlement was ‘only the beginning of getting full justice’ for her daughter.
“Justice for Breonna means that we will continue to save lives in her honor,” she said last week.
“No amount of money accomplishes that, but the police reform measures that we were able to get passed as a part of this settlement mean so much more to my family, our community, and to Breonna’s legacy.”
Protests erupted after the grand jury’s decision was announced. All three officers who opened fire and killed Taylor were not charged in direct connection with her death.
“This is a tragedy,” said attorney general Cameron. “I know that not everyone will be satisfied with the charges reported today. Every person has an idea of what they think justice is.”
