The woman who chained herself to her boyfriend has now developed painful ulcers due to prolonged skin exposure to the metal.
28-year-old Viktoria Pustovitova and 33-year-old Alexander Kudlay from Ukraine made the news after getting chained to each other for the predetermined period of three months in an attempt to break the record.
Officially kicking off their test, the couple vowed to stay chained to each other in front of the Unity statue in Kyiv.
Supervising the start of the experiment was Vitaly Zorin, a national register of records official, who confirmed the couple was sane as they decided to test themselves and their relationship by locking their wrists together.
Shortly after starting their life hand-in-hand, however, Viktoria developed painful ulcers due to prolonged exposure to the thick metal chain around her left wrist.
Calling his girlfriend’s condition a “nightmare,” Alexander revealed how they smeared ointment on the wounds to no avail, prompting the couple to seek medical attention. After a visit to the hospital, they were allegedly told Viktoria should wear a tight bandage to protect her wounds.
Meanwhile, a dermatologist warned the couple that they could face dangerous complications if they continue with their experiment.
“These are ulcers from prolonged contact with metal, from constant clamping of the tissues, leading to circulatory disorders,” Tatyana Egorova said.
After embarking on their mission to stay chained to each other for three months, Viktoria and Alexander have learned to do everything from changing clothes to pooping and peeing to eating together. They also bought custom-made clothes with zippers at the side for easy changing.
As Alexander admitted, it was his idea to get chained after his girlfriend kept on moving out of their place after every argument they had.
“I jokingly said – ‘I’ll tie you up. Why do you need all this running around?’ In the end we did so,” he explained. “Viktoria didn’t really agree at first, but I convinced her.”
