A boyfriend has divided the internet after revealing that he had banned his girlfriend from using tampons.
As the unnamed guy revealed in his Reddit post, he decided to come up with an ultimatum to get his “forgetful” girlfriend to stop using tampons during her period.
According to the man, he is afraid that his partner isn’t taking the health risks associated with the use of tampons seriously enough. He also believes that she “doesn’t change them regularly enough” because she is “forgetful.”
While presenting his worries on the internet, the boyfriend was referring to toxic shock syndrome, a potentially deadly condition that can be a result of blood-soaked tampons that are left inside the vagina for too long, allowing bacteria to develop and possibly lead to a life-threatening infection.
“She doesn’t change them regularly enough in my opinion. I think it’s a forgetfulness thing? She doesn’t take risks seriously?” he wrote on Reddit.
“This stresses me out because I’m worried she will get sick. However I have never made demands before recently.”
As the boyfriend added, his girlfriend was not happy with his demands.
“She is furious with me. Says I’m being controlling. Says a man should not be demanding to women what sanitary products to use,” the boyfriend wrote.
“I’m at a point where this is a hill I’m willing to die on and it may be a deal breaker is she doesn’t agree to this.”
After taking his private matter to Reddit, the boyfriend received mixed replies whereas some people applauded him for worrying about his girlfriend’s health while others suggested that he is controlling her and that his girlfriend’s period management is none of his business.
“Write that down and every time you get the urge to forbid her from tampons, read it and then sit back down,” one person wrote while another told the man that this isn’t his call to make.
“How would you feel if she asked you to stop using toilet paper because she thought you ‘used it wrong?’” one Redditor wrote.
Some, however, appeared to rush to the boyfriend’s side saying he was just worried about her health.
“Honestly? It sounds like this is less about tampons/bodily autonomy and more about your girlfriend willingly and repeatedly putting her health at risk and refusing to make any changes,” one netizen wrote.
Another added: “You can get toxic shock syndrome (TSS) from leaving tampons in too long. You’re right to be worried – she’s putting herself at risk.”
