A Six-Year-Old Boy Was Found to Be Locked for Two Weeks in His Grandma’s Shed for Stealing Food


A grandmother and her boyfriend have been arrested by the police authorities after they found a boy locked inside the shed of her property.

53 years old Esmeralda Lira along with Jose Balderas, her boyfriend, has been charged for child endangerment.

Police were informed and called up to Coston Drive on Sunday around 11:30 pm after getting calls regarding a young boy who as was tied up in the shed.

When police asked Esmeralda about the whereabouts of the boy, she said that he was living with his mother. But when they later encountered Jose, he revealed the truth and directed them towards the garden shed.

Police asked Lira to open the door, or else they would have to break it down. And when she opened the shed door, the boy was lying on the floor with hands tied at back.

While Lira told that this is the first time she had punished the boy like this, Jose revealed that the boy had been locked inside the shed for two weeks because he stole food.

When the police talked to the boy, he revealed that the abuse started after he was out of school due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Presently, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is investigating the case. And the six-year-old along with his seven-year-old sister and four-year-old brother are taken from their home and put in foster care.

Students learning from home during the current crisis can increase the cases of abuse as they are not protected by the teachers who are generally the ones that file reports on parents.

Sarah Burns from Dallas Children’s Advocacy center explained that their main concern had been children being abused and having no responsible adult to keep them safe and report the abuse.

In the past six weeks, reports of abuse from teachers have declined 50% as opposed to prior to the pandemic.
