Aside from being familiar with Australia’s animals, Owen also had a special connection to the country as he had lived there for several months because his dad Simon Colley grew up in Sydney, according to CNN.

In an interview with the outlet, Caitlin Colley said: “He has a pull to Australia. He’s very proud of the fact that he lived there. I don’t think he remembers any of it but he’s proud of it.”

The mother and son decided to make clay koalas and give them to family and friends in exchange for a donation to the Wildlife Rescue South Coast, a New South Wales-based volunteer organization that help.

Their amazing idea immediately took off and Owen managed to raise $1,000 in donations via Venmo app before setting up a GoFundMe page, where he raised more than $50,000.

The family wrote on their GoFundMe page: “We are humbled beyond belief — your generosity toward fire-affected animals, and to a little boy doing his part to help them, is staggering.

Colley also said to CNN: “It was really the first time Owen had made a wish for something other than Lego or something other than himself.

“We asked him if he wanted to help and … together we came up with this,” she added. “We could make some clay koalas and give them in response to donations from friends and family.”
