5-year-old Oscar Saxelby-Lee has had a lifesaving stem cell transplant after thousands of people came forward to see if they were a match.
The little boy, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia, was in a race against time when his condition worsened this year. His desperate parents, 26-year-old Jamie Lee and 23-year-old Olivia Saxelby, begged the public to help save their child in three months.
Thousands of people including almost five thousands donor lined up for hours in the rain so they could be tested.
When a match was finally found, Oscar was given a go signal to receive the stem cell transplant. His parents said the operation was successful.
“Thank you to everyone who registered and to Oscar’s personal donor who has given him a life-saving transplant,” his parents wrote on Facebook.
“It has been a very emotional day here on ward 19 but also a very happy one.
“These cells are special, the most special blood cells we have, and we have every hope this will save our beautiful boy.
“We cannot wait for the day that Oscar rings that bell and meets his donor. Here’s to a new marrow, a new beginning and a new adventure.”
It was in December last year when Oscar was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He had been undergoing chemotherapy at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
After his parents launched an appeal to find donors, 4,855 people also lined up for hours in the rain to get tested in addition to those who registered online.
Thankfully, a match had been found for the little boy. When tests showed there were no cancerous cells left in his bone marrow, he was given a go signal to have the stem cell transplant.
“We felt like we could not see light at the end of the tunnel, but when looking at Oscar’s cheeky smile, bravery and determination, we managed to pull our strength together again,” Miss Saxelby said.
“Oscar is a fun, loving, energetic five-year-old boy who deserves to live to the full alongside the other troopers fighting such horrific diseases,” she added.
