A 2-year-old boy tragically passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his North Carolina home.
According to reports, the young boy died a few days after the incident, which occurred at his home in Fayetteville.
It is not clear how the toddler managed to get the weapon but two adults and a teen were at home when the accident happened.
Fayetteville Police Department Lt. Gary Womble confirmed that three other people were at home when the horrifying incident occurred but it wasn’t revealed if any of them were supposed to be watching over the two-year-old.
According to WTVD, Womble said during a press conference: “In my opinion, any gunshot wound is serious, especially when it happens to a juvenile.
“It’s even more serious and more serious for us in our investigative methods to find out exactly what occurred that a child would suffer a gunshot wound. That’s important to us and that’s what the detectives are working hard to determine what happened.”
A neighbor said to WTVD that she saw a woman crying outside the house moments before paramedics and officers arrived on the scene.
The 2-year-old boy was rushed to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill where he passed away from his injuries a few days later.
One internet user commented: “Happened in a neighboring city. The family claimed 3 year old shot the 2 year old. The rumors say the adults in the house had an argument. But when the cops arrived every one had their story matched.”
Another wrote: “Unsecured firearm. When are some gun owners going to get a brain.”
A third added: “I’m going to need EVERYONE in that house to face charges. There’s no excuse about how that little baby who is probably still in diapers could get his hands on a LOADED GUN!! Inexcusable.”
