A 2-year-old boy was left in critical condition after he was shot in the head while in a car on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive.
The horrifying incident occurred only hours after seven people were shot in a brutal brawl only a few miles away, police said.
Chicago Police said that the vehicle crashed after the child was shot near Grant Park at 11 am.
Shocked witnesses told investigators that they heard gunfire moments before the car crashed. They said that a woman jumped out of the vehicle with the baby and someone rushed them to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The child was later transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital where officers said he was in critical condition.
Hours before the incident, a fight in the South side neighborhood of Englewood turned to gun violence and left seven people injured.
A woman was severely injured after she was shot in the abdomen and arm.
Five men were also taken to a hospital in fair condition, while another person managed to leave the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to a leg.
Detectives are still investigating and no arrests have been made.
The shootings follow violence across Chicago on Easter Sunday that left seven people dead and more than ten injured.
Just last week, a police officer shot Adam Toledo, 13, while he was running away from officers while carrying a gun. He died at the scene and the handgun was recovered.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said police officers have been warned that members of the gang might attack or shoot them in revenge for the teen’s death.
