5-year-old Jayden Espinosa is being hailed a hero for saving 13 people from a fire after the smoke detectors in their home in Chicago malfunctioned.

Even though he is only a little boy, he knew exactly what he had to do when a fire broke out in their home, according to Fox 32 News.

Speaking about the terrifying incident, he told the outlet: “I smelled the smoke and I got up and went outside. Auntie’s house was burning … I was scared!”

It was 4 am when the fire occurred. Everyone in the duplex was sleeping, including the boy’s two siblings.

But Jayden had woken up after smelling smoke and he knew right away that something was wrong. He immediately woke up his aunt and others to alert them of the situation.

The little boy then rushed downstairs to alert the neighbors sleeping below.

When asked how he knew what he had to do during the scary situation, Jayden replied: “Because I’m smart and brilliant.”

He added: “I got everyone out of that house because I was trying to save them.”

Jayden’s mother, Tracey Espinosa, also said her son was in the right place at the right time. “[Jayden] said that God has a plan … Everything will be okay,” she told Fox 32 News.

“He saved everyone. If he hadn’t got sent to his Auntie’s house Wednesday, then he would’ve never been there to get everybody out of the building.”

Days after the incident, the American Red Cross stepped in to help the family. A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help them ‘get back on their feet.’
