A brave young boy from Kingsland, Texas is recovering from severe burns after saving his two cousins in a boat explosion.
It was on April 24 when 7-year-old Bentley Mehringer and his family went out on a lake in two boats when, after a few minutes, a boat explosion turned their outing into a terrifying disaster.
Bentley’s mother, Breanna Sullivan, saw the accident from their boat as the other one exploded.
She told The Duncan Banner: “No one knew what happened so it was immediate panic and screaming in all directions around us. Bentley and … two other younger girls were down in the bottom of the boat where the bunks are.”
They later found out that 7-year-old Bentley saved his two cousins from the explosion without thinking about himself. He suffered severe burns but he’s now recovering at a Texas children’s hospital.
In an interview with Texoma News Network, Bentley said: “I smelled … gas and then I went up to check and then there was a big explosion.”
“I’m a superhero,” the brave lad expressed, to which his proud mother replied: “Yes, you are a superhero.”
Sullivan said two people and one dog flew into the air because of the explosion but the two cousins that selfless Bentley helped were ‘untouched’ after the accident.
“He thought he was on fire and could hear his uncle yelling from the top of the boat for them to get out,” she told the Banner. “He said he sent the other two girls up before him because he didn’t want anyone else hurt.”
“Bentley is a true hero in my eyes for being so brave and selfless at such a young age,” Sullivan added. “He was so tough, I don’t think he even shed a tear until we were being separated for his helicopter ride.”
It is not yet known what caused the boat motor to explode. A Facebook fundraiser was set up to help cover the young boy’s medical expenses.
