Police officers said there were many adults and children when the horrific incident happened in Columbus, US, around 11:30 am on Monday, WSYX reported.
The one-year-old boy was rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. According to reports, he suffered serious injuries but he is expected to recover.
Officers from the Columbus Division of Police arrived at the scene and found the child’s parents leaving with him.
The parents said that their son accidentally shot himself after he found the gun.
The boy’s father, Walker, was later charged with endangering children, a third-degree felony. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Everytown for Gun Safety, a pressure group, said that hundreds of children in the United States accidentally shoot themselves every year.
In 2020, there have been at least 240 accidental shootings by children, resulting in 150 injuries and more than 100 fatalities.
Research also shows that there were more than 300 accidental shootings by children every year since 2015. According to Everytown, their research shows that around 4.6 million children live in homes where at least one gun is kept unlocked and loaded.
The group and other organizations and charities are urging parents and gun owners to take extra precautions and keep firearms locked, unloaded, and separated from ammunition.
