4-Year-Old Boy Made A Promise To Dying Sister, He Has Kept It For 13 Years

Alex Kunda was only four when he made a promise to his sister Miranda.

The older sister never missed a day of first grade as she was engaged with her studies. For any new student, that was an amazing achievement.

Unfortunately, Miranda had autoimmune hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that occurs when the immune system of the body turns against liver cells.

Autoimmune hepatitis can cause nausea, abdominal pain, joint pain and chronic fatigue.

In cases of advanced liver disease or when the condition no longer responds to drug treatments, a liver transplant may be required. But for Miranda, the disease took her life.

When it became clear that the young girl would not be able to make it, her school decided to give her a reward for her perfect attendance. It was then 4-year-old Alex who accepted the award.

As soon as he exited the stage with his sister’s reward, he told something to his parents.

Preston Kunda, his father, recalled: “He says, ‘I’m going to do this for her.’ He was going to get perfect attendance in honor of her.”

Alex was young when he said those words but he intended to keep his promise.

During his fourth grade, his parents asked if he could take a break so he could go to Disney World. “On a Friday, we were going to take him out of school. And he said no,” his mom, Arlene Kunda, recalled.

Alex said: “This was the one promise I remembered making to her. And I can’t make any more promises to her in person, anymore. So the one promise I did make, I was going to keep it.”

“I’ve never been absent, tardy, or been checked out early for the past 13 years,” he went on. “Every time I would not want to come to school, I would think about the promise I made and how important it was for me to keep it.”

Alex is the only student in the Glynn County School District to receive a perfect attendance reward. He managed to do it because of his love for his sister.
