Detectives investigating the incident said the two teens were shot in their white Jeep as their vehicle approached the barrier around Seattle’s Capitol Hill Organized Protest zone on Monday. People in the zone said CHOP ‘security guards’ fired at the Jeep only after the teens started shooting at them.

Witnesses reportedly told 911 dispatchers that they saw armed individuals firing into the Jeep but made no remark of whether the teens of color were armed or shot first.

In the CCTV footage, multiple gunshots can be heard in the minutes before the Jeep could be seen driving to the makeshift barrier.

A female CHOP protester can be heard yelling for the ‘security’ to keep their ‘eyes up’ as there were ‘two people with guns’ in a ‘stolen white Jeep.’

When the vehicle came around the corner, gunshots were fired before the teens crashed into the barrier. After the vehicle crashed, about a dozen shots can be heard but it is not clear from the surveillance video who the first shots came from.

Investigators searched the Jeep for evidence but said that it was evident the crime scene had been ‘disturbed.’

Stitch, a CHOP member, told Daily Mail, “The protesters responded quickly with CHOP security returning fire hitting both the driver and passenger in the front seat. I’m not certain if anyone else was hit by gunfire, there were bullets flying all over the place.”

Police Chief Carmen Best said detectives had searched the white Jeep but people had already gone into the car before they could investigate.

She said, “The typical things we search for in a case like this, or in a shooting like this, weren’t there, and it was abundantly clear to our detectives – people had been in and out of the car after the shooting.”
