A young boy has been found dead in a sugar cane field in Louisiana four days after he was reported missing by his father.
The body of 15-year-old Quawan Bobby Charles was discovered near the village of Loreauville with his face mutilated in what his heartbroken parents said is a racial hate crime.
When the boy’s father, Kenneth Jacko, reported his son missing, officers arrived at their home and said that the boy had gone to a football game and they were dismissed.
But Bobby’s parents discovered that their son had been picked up from their home by Janet Irvin and her son Gavin, 17.
Four days later, Bobby’s lifeless body was found in a sugar cane field 25 miles from their home. His lips had been ripped off and his face had multiple lacerations.
The grieving parents were outraged after the Iberia County Sheriff’s Department said that their son drowned because he had water in his lungs and that an autopsy report will take around 12 weeks to be completed.
Celine Charles, Bobby’s cousin, took photos of the boy’s injuries and shared it on social media as proof that police are ignoring the obvious suspicions.
Bobby’s mother, Roxanne Nelson, told The Associated Press: “This is a nightmare. I’ve had to go on a wild goose chase just to get information.
“I want the lady who came to get my son without my permission, his dad’s permission, to be held accountable.
“She took them to her house. He was alive and well when he was here, and now he is dead.”
The Iberia County Sheriff’s Department released a statement and said: “The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a male juvenile, who was discovered by Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies on November 3, 2020 near the village of Loreauville.
“Investigators have interviewed multiple individuals and collected physical evidence which is being processed.”
It added: “An autopsy has been performed and the results are pending as of this time. Investigators have updated the parents of the juvenile concerning the status of the investigation and will continue to do so throughout the investigation.
“Anyone with information concerning this death is urged to contact Detective Jarred Spurlock of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Investigation at 337-369-3711.”
