A one-year-old boy tragically passed away and his mother was left injured after a carjacker reportedly backed into them outside a hospital in Texas.
Police arrived at the Texas Health Huguley Hospital before 9 pm on Sunday after receiving calls of a car accident.
Investigators said that a father and mother had met in the parking lot to exchange custody of their child when a carjacker, 30-year-old Nico Delafuente, tried to steal the mother’s vehicle.
According to NBC 5, baby Zayden’s father jumped back inside his car to stop the suspect.
But Delafuente reportedly backed into the woman, who was holding her 1-year-old baby. The two fell to the ground and the suspect ran them over for the second time as he drove away from the scene.
Zayden, who would have turned two next month, was taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center where he passed away from his injuries.
The mother-of-one was taken to hospital with brain damage and bleeding but was expected to recover.
A GoFundMe page set up for the family described Zayden as a ‘child of love and spirit.’
“Everyone who knew him loved him, and that love will continue to carry,” the description added.
“This go fund me has been set up to help with funeral expenses, hospital bills, and all the things no parent should have to face.”
Delafuente crashed into a tree not far from the scene and collapsed from injuries he suffered in the collision.
According to CBS DFW, a security guard of the hospital took him into custody until cops arrived and arrested him.
After receiving treatment for his injuries, Delafuente was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery and capital murder.
