A 13-year-old boy passed away in a horrific accident after he was run over by a corn harvesting machine.
According to WJRT, Jeffrey Lewis Powell from Elkton, Michigan had been dropped off at the field in Chandler Township Saturday morning so he could go hunt deer but he had fallen asleep.
A 25-year-old man then returned to the cornfield just before 9 am to finish the harvest without knowing that there was a boy in the field.
But while driving the corn harvesting machine, the man accidentally drove over Powell and only realized the devastating incident after discovering his body ‘a very short while later.’
Sadly, emergency workers declared the young boy dead at the scene.
Powell’s family said in his obituary that he passed away ‘doing what he loved…hunting.’
The teen was said to have been an accomplished archer, fisherman, and hunter. In addition to playing on the 7th and 8th-grade football team, he was also a state champion on his middle school’s archery team.
Relatives and friends described Powell as being an enthusiastic and generous child who kept on smiling.
One of his former teachers wrote in an obituary guestbook entry that Powell ‘LOVED Science and anything to do with nature!” and that the teen would also ‘stand right next to me, look up and give me the biggest grin he could.’
The teacher also wrote that Powell ‘was very helpful and would share personal experiences about animals, trees, and ecosystems.’ She added: ‘When I retired June of 2019, Jeff wrote the nicest, most endearing letter to me. I know he is up in Heaven helping all the little angels get their wings.’
