The 15-year-old boy who was charged with the murder of 18-year-old Tessa Majors confessed to his jailed dad in a wiretapped phone call.
Rashaun Weaver is charged with stabbing the Barnard student in upper Manhattan’s Morningside Park, only blocks away from the campus.
Police told the New York Post that the teen confessed to his crime in a phone call with his dad Clifford Weaver.
Describing the conversation, court papers said: “The defendant stated in substance that he was in the park and tried to take the girl’s phone and ‘she was hanging onto her phone’ and that he hit her with a knife.”
The father, who has a long history of conviction on drug and robbery charges, was imprisoned at Mohawk Correctional Facility at the time of the call.
Majors, who aspired to study journalism and played in a band, was stabbed while she was talking through a park.
According to prosecutors, she tried to fight back against the attackers. DNA found from her nails matched that of Weaver’s.
Weaver faces another indictment in another robbery, which authorities say he committed while on the run as a suspect in Major’s death.
According to the indictment against the 15-year-old and his associate, 14-year-old Keith Bonds, they viciously attacked and robbed a man in East Harlem on Valentine’s Day.
Prosecutors said that Weaver distracted the man and two unidentified accomplices robbed him of $130, shoes, and cellphone.
A 13-year-old was also charged but tried as a juvenile. He was sentenced to 6 months in a detention facility after pleading guilty to robbery.
Weaver has also been charged with robbing another victim four days before Major’s murder.
He is being held without bail in juvenile detention and is scheduled in court in November.
