An 11-year-old boy who survived a car crash woke up from a coma and found out on Google that his four cousins died.
Despite spending over two months unconscious, Charbel Kassas is now talking and walking.
His cousins, 9-year-old Sienna, 11-year-old Veronique, 12-year-old Angelina and 13-year-old Antony died instantly when drunk driver 29-year-old Samuel William Davidson lost control of his vehicle on Bettington Road in northwest of Sydney.
Family members feared Charbel would never recover from severe brain injury but he managed to wake up in early April. When he picked up a phone and searched for his cousin’s names, he was shocked to find out that his cousins died in the February 1 crash.
One of his relatives, David Mannah, told Daily Mail Australia that his family wanted Charbel to focus on his recovery.
Mr. Mannah said: “When he woke up he didn’t know that Antony, Angelina, Sienna and Veronique were dead, and the family hadn’t had a chance to tell him yet.
“They wanted him to focus on his recovery but he picked up a phone that was next to his bed and Googled their names.
“He was heartbroken, but he is doing OK now though and the good thing is that he is going to recover. He is really lucky.”
When the young boy was rushed to hospital, his parents Rania and Assad were told he may never recover.
Charbel’s father shared a photo which was captioned: “My best friend Charbel Kassas, heal you hero.”
His family couldn’t visit him in the hospital due to coronavirus restrictions, said his uncle Danny Abdallah.
“A lot of people started praying, there were rosaries, novenas and everyone coming to the hospital and praying out the front.
“At the moment he’s awake, he’s speaking, he’s alert and he can see. His brain’s a little bit under developed which is going to improve with time, but he’s walking. This is all to do with these prayers, because his situation is a miracle. He’s a walking miracle.”
The truck driver, 29-year-old Samuel William Davidson, was allegedly high on a cocktail of MDMA and cocaine. He is facing 34 charges over the incident and will go back to court on June 11.
