A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murdering his missing classmate whose body was discovered in the woods.
Police named Aiden Fucci as the suspect in the killing of Tristyn Bailey, 13.
The teen reportedly took a smug selfie in the back of a police car and shared it on Snapchat with the caption: “Hey guys has inbody (sic) Trystyn lately.”
Aiden is believed to have taken the photo before Tristyn’s body was discovered. It is not clear how she died but officers said she was fully clothed when her body was found.
The 14-year-old was taken into custody on second-degree murder charges. However, prosecutors haven’t yet decided if he will be charged as an adult or a juvenile.
Tristyn was last seen at 1:12 am on Sunday. Her family reported her missing at 10am.
Dozens of volunteers joined in the search of the girl after she was reported missing.
The man who found her body said he had seen the news about the missing girl and he went out to search for her.
St. John County Sheriff Robert Hardwick said at a press conference on Monday morning: “We have arrested a suspect by the name of Aiden Fucci, 14 year old. He is currently in custody charged with second degree murder.
“This is a long process, we’re in the very early stages of this. The suspect is in custody – there are no further threats to this case.”
A spokesperson for the state’s attorney’s office said in a statement on Monday afternoon: “As Sheriff Hardwick stated in his press conference today, our office will continue to investigate the case to determine both the appropriate charges going forward, and whether or not (Fucci) will be charged as an adult.”
