A 10-year-old boy decided to end his life after he was bullied by his schoolmates because of his colostomy bag.
Tami Charles and Donnie Bridges gave birth to their ‘miracle baby’ Seven Bridges 10 years ago. Little Seven underwent multiple surgeries, including a colostomy which involved the fitting of a colostomy bag, a small waterproof pouch that collects waste from the body.
Colostomies are done when a patient’s abdomen is infected or if there is a complete or partial block in their large bowel or if they have suffered an injury to their colon.
Some people only need to use a colostomy bag for a short period but Seven needed to wear it long-term. This meant he needed to wear it to Kerrick Elementary School.
However, his classmates would taunt and tease him for his colostomy bag. This resulted in his tragic death. And even before that, Seven told his mother that one student had called him the N-word.
One of Seven’s friends suggested that he beat up the student but the 5th grader refused. His friend then started choking him.
Seven said at that time: “I still can’t get him choking me out of my head. I was thinking, ‘Why is he doing that?’ I thought he was my friend.”
His mother, Tami, then took to social media and posted a video that quickly went viral. In the clip, she called out the Jefferson County Public Schools for their lack of action.
Seven said after the incident: “I know that I can get it out of my mind, and tomorrow is like a better day, so I can still make friends with him.”
But the situation didn’t improve as Tami had come home from store and found Seven took his own life.
“I saw my son dead. That’s something in my head,” Tami expressed. Her husband, Donnie, added: “For the few minutes that we left, he didn’t want us to see that.”
