11-year-old Joe with Asperger’s syndrome has been struggling to make friends ever since he remembers.

Despite his troubles with social interactions, the boy is incredibly talented and capable of solving four different types of Rubik’s cubes in just over a minute.

According to the boy’s mother, Jenny Durno, she hasn’t been throwing him a party for his birthdays as there is no one to invite.

Speaking of her talented son to LADbible, the 39-year-old mum said:

“He doesn’t enjoy typical ‘boy things’ like football. He doesn’t have a best friend and actually, I’ve not thrown him a birthday party since he was about five years old because he’s had no friends to invite. He’s a lovely boy, I wish more people could see that.

“It gets him down that people don’t understand the way he thinks or when people look at him funny like he’s crazy.

If he gets overwhelmed, the cubes calm him down. He carries one everywhere he goes, even the front row of his grandma’s wedding.

“Joe is seen as the kid who’s a bit different so I thought it would be great for people to see how fantastic he is.”

As the proud mother added, cubes helped Joe overcome depression and meet new people.

“He says that he can’t explain how to solve a cube, he just knows how to do it through muscle memory. He has made a few friends through the competition he went to last year, but they live some distance away,” Jenny said.

“Joe is at secondary school now but when he was in primary school, he became very depressed and felt isolated regarding lack of friendships but since he discovered cubes, his mood has picked up dramatically.

“He solved his first one when he was eight, but he found his love for them about a year ago. He said he watched a YouTube video then he more or less picked it up and has remembered since.

“There are 4.3 quintillion ways to mix a standard 3×3 cube, apparently, but Joe said it doesn’t matter, he can solve it whichever way it’s mixed. I bought him one a few years ago and he’s just decided one day, that would be his ‘thing.’”

And when it comes to his beloved hobby, Joe doesn’t plan on slowing down.

“I think the challenge of solving more (than one cube) was purely based on him getting bored of just solving one,” Jenny explained.

“His best time for solving a standard cube is 13 seconds so he’s looking for something more challenging, hence why he now tries to do more cubes as fast as possible.

“Joe’s aim is to become the world record holder for solving a cube, which I think is between three and four seconds. He met the previous record holder, Felix Zemdegs, last year and aspires to be a as good as him.”
