2016 was a brutal year.

We have lost so many important icons, from Prince, to Gene Wilder, and most recently Carrie Fisher. Many people have joked that 2016 has taken too much, that it has been “a dumpster fire of a year,” and that it just needs to end. One of the very tragic deaths of 2016 was David Bowie back in January. It is hard to believe it has almost been a year without this legend.

When Bowie died, the world was in shock. Only his close family and friends knew he was battling cancer, as he kept it a secret from the media. He must have known his time was coming soon, though. His loved ones say that his final album, Blackstar, was his “parting gift” to his fans.

David Bowie’s final music video was released just three short days before his death. The opening lyrics to “Lazarus” are, “Look up here, I’m in heaven.” He knew this album would be goodbye.

The beautiful (and slightly creepy) video for “Lazarus” opens on Bowie lying in a hospital bed.point 89 | His head is bandaged up and there are black buttons where his eyes should be.point 152 | After writhing around and floating slightly above the bed, a mysterious hand reaches out from underneath it, and he stretches his arms out wide like he’s being pulled up toward heaven.point 310 |

One YouTube commenter gave the best explanation for the video: “This song is a fitting send off for a great musician, much like Freddie Mercury’s ‘The Show Must Go On’ and Johnny Cash’s version of ‘Hurt.’ The space oddity sent out one final message to ground control telling everyone he’s going home.”
