We always prefer bottled water because we think it is safe and pure, but can you imagine that bottled water can be more unsafe than municipal water. According to a new Consumer Reports investigation, they found the levels of arsenic that are nearby to the FDA’s safety standard in most of the well-known brands and well above what’s safe to drink regularly.
Consumer Reports investigation writes on their website after their ‘survey on hundreds of public records and test reports from bottled water brands, and from various federal and state regulators.”
And they found that 11 of more than 130 bottled water brands contains detectable amounts of arsenic, some are close to, or even higher, from the FDA’s standard of 10 ppb.
The investigation found that in three samples of Peñafiel, a mineral water brand manufactured by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group contained having arsenic levels above the federal limit of 10 ppb.
Three samples of Whole Foods’ water, branded Starkey, ranged from 9.48 to 9.86 ppb, just under the FDA limit.
Consumer Reports research shows that regularly drinking water with high arsenic levels can be dangerous and cause health problems, in research it found six popular bottled water brands with arsenic levels of 3 ppb or higher, including Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water, and Volvic, as well as regional brands Crystal Creamery and EartH₂O.
Research shows that having a high level of arsenic can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and another disease, as well as lower IQ’s in children. Regular exposure to small amounts of arsenic can also harm adults too.
Arsenic is a naturally occurring metal, and it occurs in many minerals, usually in combination with sulfur and metal sand is often found in water supplies. Federal regulation confirms all municipal water supplies are regularly tested and arsenic (or other harmful materials) are removed. At some point, bottled water on stores which promise to be pure contains more harmful arsenic than tap water that supplies in some homes.
So, be smart to choose your water!
