A boss has gone viral after announcing that non-smoking employees would be adding an extra four days to their annual leave because they don’t go on cigarette breaks while doing their job.
The decision to reward staff who don’t smoke at work was brought forward by KCJ Training and Employment Solutions’ managing director, Don Bryden, who believes that some employees spend up to a working hour per day on smoking.
To make it fair for the employees who spend more time doing their job and less time smoking, Mr. Bryden decided to give them an additional four days off on a yearly basis.
“I was watching the employees that smoke. They have four, five or even 10 cigarettes a day and take around 10 minutes outside each time. I looked at the other guys during these breaks and they’re always on the phones, typing away and trying to do their work, so I thought they should be compensated,” he told Swindon Advertiser.
“Last year, I saw something on social media suggesting that workers who don’t smoke should have an extra four days off.
“Everyone was saying it was a great idea but nobody said they would actually do it, so I came into work at the start of January feeling generous and told everyone we would kick it off.”
As the businessman added, the change was well-accepted by non-smokers whereas smokers quickly promised they would stop smoking at work if they also got to spend four extra days off.
“Funnily enough, when I made the announcement some of the workers said they weren’t going to smoke anymore, but it doesn’t work like that!” he added.
“If they can give up smoking for 12 months, I’ll give them the extra four days.”
