In what reads like a plot from a suspense or thriller film, police arrested a Kentuckian who rode 5 hours on a bus to Illinois with a bag that was packed with human body parts.
The police believes that the body parts belonged to the man’s girlfriend.
The arrested man has since been identified as Melvin Martin Jr., an African American man seen in the picture above. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Martin hopped on a Greyhound bus from Louisville, Kentucky to Chicago where the rest of his family is residing at.
After meeting up with their son in Chicago, Martin’s parents drove him to their place in Markham – not knowing the contents of the bag. The family said they began suspecting Martin and the suspicious bag because he never unpacked the contents and didn’t let anyone touch it.
Although it is unclear when the complaint was filed, the Markham police chief said he had previously received reports of a foul smell coming from the bag. The family was able to unpack the bag when Martin headed down to the local library without the bag.
After realizing what was in the bag all along, the family immediately called the police. Soon, the police reached the conclusion that the dismembered parts belonged to Martin’s girlfriend who he lived with in Louisville. More body parts have since been found in Louisville.
Although the final results have not come out yet, the Markham police chief said they have everything from dental records to DNAs to match with the torso found in Louisville. The FBI said it is working in tandem with the police in Markham and Lousiville.
A neighbor to Martin’s parents in Markham expressed his disgust and shock at the news. Saying that he has only heard about these dastardly stories in the movies and TV, he said he was especially disturbed by Martin’s decision to travel along with the body parts to Markham.
Martin has since been taken into custody for escaping justice. As soon as the forensic results confirm that the body parts belonged to Martin’s girlfriend, it is highly likely that he will be charged with murdering and dismembering her.
