The bodies of an 11-year-old boy and his mother have been discovered in a pond after a young boy was heard crying for help.
Police rushed to Grace Lord Park in New Jersey on Tuesday evening after receiving reports of the boy, who was found unattended but unharmed.
However, officers noticed ‘footprints going into the water,’ and they discovered the bodies of 35-year-old Warya Syed and her 11-year-old son Uzair Ahmed.
According to reports, police had been called to the area after a passerby heard a boy screaming out for help.
It is not determined why the family was at the park or why the mother and her son entered the pond.
One resident, Lexi Finn, said to NBC: “Who wants to go in the water at this time of the year anyway? You don’t want to go in this water at all.”
The bodies of the mother and son were found at the top of the waterfall that flows into the Rockaway River.
In a statement, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said: “This is an active and ongoing joint investigation being conducted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Boonton Police Department Detective Bureau and Boonton Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team.”
Morris County Sheriff James Gannon said: “We’re that we find the facts out as to what happened here.”
“It’s obviously a very sad day when children are involved in this type of situation, horrible situation, our deepest condolences go out to the family,” acting Morris County Prosecutor Carroll added.
One person commented: “Good lord what an horrific event. Makes me sick to think of the little one. Mum was probably trying to rescue her child. So, so awful. Sorry to all their family. RIP.”
Another wrote: “So Sad for this 6 year old baby now lost without his beloved Mommy and older Brother. It’s heartbreaking for what this child has to now cope with for the rest of his life. Very Sad.”
