A New Jersey school board member decided to resign after she forgot to turn her camera off while going to the bathroom during a Zoom meeting.
Frances Cogelja, one of the trustees on the Hackensack Board of Education, accidentally left her laptop camera on while relieving herself in front of 150 people, including students.
Cogelja was seen going to the bathroom and relieving herself while her laptop camera was still on during the meeting.
When she returned, no one said anything about her bathroom break but the New Jersey board’s vice president, Scott James-Vickery, said: “You need to go.”
“We’re here trying to get work done while you’re sitting on the toilet,” he added during the tense conference.
One participant who saw the incident took a photo and shared it to an online message board.
Cogelja made headlines in 2019 when she said to the district’s acting superintendent she was ‘disgusted and appalled’ that LGBTQ movement’s history would be included to the syllabus.
“I have every right as a parent to not have my child participate in something that I do not think is suitable as part of a public school curriculum,” she said at that time.
“I believe conversations having to do with sexuality should be had at home between parents and their children.”
Her remarks prompted calls for her resignation and sparked outrage. She later apologized for everything that she said.
Cogelja decided to resign on Tuesday and it went into effect right away. Trustees have until January 29 to fill the vacancy.
One person commented: “Maybe she didnt want to miss anything? but if youre going for a quick restroom break idk why youd feel the need to bring your whole laptop into the bathroom. If you thought it was so important just wait or ask for a brief recess. Plus couldnt she see her image was still up? Simple mistake I guess..”
