A Black Lives Matter mural in Chicago was defaced and repainted by the perpetrators to read All Lives Matter instead.
The incident occurred in Oak Park in Cook County, Illinois, where volunteers painted a colorful, 100-foot-long Black Lives Matter slogan on the road.
The mural is one of many that have popped up across the nation amid George Floyd-inspired protests against racial injustice.
On Tuesday night, however, the mural was vandalized by perpetrators who are yet to be identified and could be charged with a hate crime.
As seen in the photos, the Black Lives Matter slogan was painted over to read All Lives Matter instead.
On the following day, community groups gathered on the street and used a water pressure cleaner to remove the fresh paint and restore the mural to its previous version.
“It cleaned up really well; there are some areas that the artists eventually may want to look at restoring some of the paint,” Camille Wilson White of Oak Park Arts said in an interview with The Chicago Tribune.
While no arrests had yet been made at the time of this writing, the investigators allegedly confirmed they “gathered evidence” that might help them “identify the vandals.”
Previously, a pair, later identified as 42-year-old Nicole Anderson and 53-year-old David Nelson, was caught on camera vandalizing a BLM mural in Martinez, California.
In the footage that went viral, the woman is seen spreading black paint over the yellow mural while her partner is standing by and defending their actions in a chat with witnesses.
Following the act of vandalism of the City-approved mural, the couple has been charged with a hate crime and two other misdemeanor counts.
