Black Lives Matter could be granted the Nobel Peace Prize after the movement has been nominated for the prestigious award.
As Petter Eide, a member of the Norwegian parliament, said, he nominated the movement for the prestigious award because it has helped raise awareness about racial injustice on a global level.
While the politician praised the movement for standing up to racism and fighting for a more inclusive future, he appeared to dismiss concerns about the violence and destruction that was carried out in the name of the movement during riots last year.
“Of course there have been incidents, but most of them have been caused by the activities of either the police or counter-protestors,” Eide said.
Defending the movement in the nominating statement shared by The Guardian, Eide claimed that BLM made a “tremendous achievement” by raising critical questions concerning inequality not only in the United States but also in Europe and Asia.
“I find that one of the key challenges we have seen in America, but also in Europe and Asia, is the kind of increasing conflict based on inequality,” the MP reportedly wrote.
“Black Lives Matter has become a very important worldwide movement to fight racial injustice. They have had a tremendous achievement in raising global awareness and consciousness about racial injustice.”
The statement went on to claim that awarding the prestigious prize to the movement would send a powerful message to the world.
“Awarding the peace prize to Black Lives Matter, as the strongest global force against racial injustice, will send a powerful message that peace is founded on equality, solidarity and human rights, and that all countries must respect those basic principles,” the nominating statement reads.
