A survey of 1,000 employers commissioned by Adecco Retail in the UK has revealed the biggest CV mistakes.
Employers have revealed the biggest mistakes people make on their CVs that include spelling errors, telling lies, including more than two pages, and including a selfie.
The employers have said that they just take 34 seconds to decide whether someone’s CV is worth reading the full or not.
Shelley Preston, head of Adecco Retail which commissioned the research, said: “Your CV is your door opener and it has to be accurate. Recruiters will see dozens – if not hundreds – of applications and while it’s important your CV stands out, you want it to be for the right reasons.”
“The first step is making sure everything is spelt perfectly, because errors like that show you’re likely to have similar low standards in your career.”

1. Spelling errors
2. Telling lies
3. Including a selfie as a picture
4. Including more than two pages
5. Including an inappropriate email address
6. Grammatical mistakes or Punctuation
7. Including hobbies in the CV
8. Including social media profile handles/links
9. Not including contact details
10. Including cliches like ‘I always go the extra mile’
11. Leaving the jobs every three months
12. Writing the company’s name wrong on the CV
13. Hard to understand layouts
14. Including irrelevant part-time jobs
15. Using big fonts to make your CV look longer
Shelley Preston added: “Your CV needs to be a true and accurate reflection of yourself and your work experience. It really does make the difference between securing your dream role and not, so it’s integral that it only contains relevant detail, is kept concise and includes no grammatical errors.”
