Joe Biden’s plan to lift Trump’s ban on transgender people from military service has received widespread praise.
The president-elect is also making promises to the LGBTQ community, vowing to carry out important proposals on their wish lists, the ABC News reported.
One of his promises is to reverse Trump’s near-total ban on military service for trans people.
In addition to lifting the Ban, the president-elect also plans to create high-level LGBTQ positions in the State Department, National Security Council, and other federal agencies.
His administration will also prioritize the 2019 Equality Act, which “prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system.”
The president-elect’s support for transgender activists comes after he acknowledged the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Biden said in a statement: “On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honour their lives – and recommit to the work that remains to ensure that every transgender and gender-nonconforming person in America has the opportunity to live authentically, earn a living wage, and be treated with dignity and respect in their communities and workplaces.”
Even though the president-elect has been praised over his plans, religious conservatives and other groups have criticized his proposal.
Gordon Klingenschmitt, a former Navy chaplain, claims that Biden wants to form a ‘transgender atheist army for the antichrist.’
Also known as Dr. Chap, Klingenschmitt referenced the president-elect’s victory speech in which he thanked ‘gay, straight and transgender’ people for their support.
“Female soldiers and students will be forced to share common showers and rooms with cross-dressing men or boys with male anatomy, within hours of Biden’s inauguration,” Klingenschmitt wrote in his newsletter.
“Christian troops who object to sharing co-ed showers and bunks with opposite gender anatomy will be vilified as ‘discriminators’ and punished, demoted, discharged or court-martialed.”
