President Joe Biden reached to Derek Chauvin’s sentence after the former Minnesota cop was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Sentencing the disgraced police officer to twenty-two and a half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, Judge Peter Cahill claimed Chauvin abused his position of authority and showed “particular cruelty” towards Floyd.

“This is based on your abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty shown to George Floyd. I’m not basing my sentencing on public opinion, I’m not basing it on any attempt to send any messages,” the judge said as he handed down the 270-month sentence.

Following the sentencing, President Biden, who previously voiced support for the Floyd family and invited them to the White House, called the sentence “appropriate.”

“I don’t know all the circumstances that were considered, but it seems to me, under the guidelines, that seems to be appropriate,” he suggested.

Earlier this year, Biden also shared his opinion on the then-ongoing trial as he claimed to have been praying for the “right verdict.”

“It’s overwhelming, in my view. I wouldn’t say that unless the jury was sequestered,” the president said at the time.

While Biden seems to be pleased with Chauvin’s sentence, the Floyd family made it clear they didn’t get what they wanted.

As George’s nephew, Brandon Williams, said, the family can’t celebrate the conviction because they believe that Chauvin should be sentenced to life in prison.

“We were served a life sentence, we can’t get George back. I feel [Chauvin] should have received a life sentence as well,” Williams expressed after saying that “22 years is not enough.”

“I won’t celebrate this, but I will celebrate a guilty conviction on a police officer who killed a black man,” he added.

Meanwhile, George’s brother Rodney called the sentence a “slap on the wrist.”

“This right here, this 22-year sentence they gave this man, is a slap on the wrist. We’re serving a life sentence not having him in our lives. And that hurts me to death,” the brother said.
