Three years ago, Rob Ayton had his first mullet cut during his vacations in Australia for just fun and change. But as time passed, he started taking care of his haircut, letting his hairs grow long at the back.

Rob, who belongs to Bideford, Devon, visited Australia once again to participate in a skateboarding competition.

Luckily for him, the annual Mulletfest contest was also taking place around the same days in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales.

Revealing that he arrived there without any pre-planning, the 31-year-old graphic designer said: “I was coming out here for a skateboarding competition and it just happened to time with me being out here for that so I could go out to Kurri Kurri and see the mullet fest itself.

“There was eight of us from all over the globe, it was good fun, a good laugh. Three years ago, I came over to Australia got a mullet haircut, chopped it up in irony really.”

Rob, thankful to both his mullet and Aussies, added: “I’ve never been a fan of the mullet or the rat’s tail, but I have to say I do like the mullet now so my point of view has changed dramatically.

“It genuinely feels like it’s been a religious ceremony for me, Australia – you’ve been amazing.”

Maintaining a mullet cut isn’t as easy as you might be thinking. As Rob explained that besides taking care of his hair, he also had to handle people’s ‘negative feedback.’

Briefly speaking, the iconic hairstyle cost the prize winner both his ‘time and patience.’

“It was actually amazing, I was so stoked,” he said of the contest. “There were 12 entries, eight of which actually turned up. The standard was way higher than I had first envisioned.

“I won the ‘international’ category, so I have the best ‘international’ mullet.”

Speaking of the criticism he endured, Rob added: “You couldn’t print a lot of the comments I get. The most PC one is ‘you look like an 80’s pornstar’.

“Generally, feedback in the UK isn’t great for mullets, however more recently I’ve had better comments about being an individual, whatever that means.”

Mulletfest is an annual competition held in Kurri Kurri that honors the best mullet cut holders in various categories. The person who wins ‘Best Mullet of them All,’ is awarded a crown that they can take home.
