Heartbreaking photos show the damage done by devastating blazes on the small island off the coast of South Australia.
Kangaroo Island is a sanctuary for wildlife and natural beauty of nature.
People are heartbroken by the loss of life and severe devastation caused by bushfires and major areas of the island have been impacted by the blaze, including homes, roads, and infrastructure.
Before and after photos show how brutal the fires were.
The main road, which was filled with greenery, became charred with only burnt branches.
Army vehicles arrived on the island to help the people and work has also been underway to restore power supplies.
So far, only a portion of the affected area has been inspected and they have identified 12km of lines brought down.
Some rain and cooler weather brought some relief but the County Fire Service declared a total fire ban.
One person commented: “The animals, the landscape, the homes and lives of loved ones – the loss of so many beautiful things is heartbreaking. Considering many of these fires were started by pyromaniacs, we need to look at changing what they are charged with. No longer give them community corrections orders or good behaviour bonds because it’s not enough. This goes well beyond manslaughter and destruction of property.”
“It is so unbelievably hard to see these photos everyday. Its gut wrenching and heartbreaking. Tears flow as I see these poor beautiful and remarkable animals die. So much loss. So much sorrow,” another said.
“Heartbreaking! seeing these Australian animals that share the same home I was born in. In a sense growing up with plenty of pictures with these wonderful wildlife as a kid. It’s painful to see not only people but animals and nature affected. I have hope that Australia will heal, restore and regenerate from these events. Nature is resilient and finds a way to beautifully rebuild. Lets treat it right,” a third wrote.
