Very recently, the researchers conducted a study to determine if humans were at risk of picking up dog-borne diseases from an MRI machine which was also used by vets to examine dogs.
What they found was more shocking. They have found that more or less half of all the sampled beards are filled with bugs that are harmful to human health.
Beards of 18 men were examined along with the necks of 30 dogs of different breeds, to which scientists found that beards had a higher count of microbes than even hounds surveyed.
Professor Andreas Gutzeit who worked in Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic and was one of the on-site scientists further confirmed this.
The study took into account samples of men aged from 18 to 76, out of which all of the bearded men showed high microbial growth, whereas only 23 out of the 30 dogs sampled had as high counts. On top of that, 7 of these men were discovered to have bugs which were highly hazardous to human health.
To maintain clarity, the scanners were disinfected after they were used to examine the dogs. This showed a drastic difference in the bacteria count when compared to the levels seen when used by humans.
Dr. Gutzeit even went as far as to say that on the basis of this experiment, it is safe to say that dogs are cleaner than bearded men.
However, this report angered the founder of the Beard Liberation Front that promotes the growth of facial hair. He further added that if tested, scientists can discover all kinds of unpleasant findings if they try to look for it in people’s hands and hair as well.
He does not believe that a beard can be unhygienic if taken proper care of. He thinks that this constant rise of negative stories is a result of pogonophobia and has nothing to do with beard hygiene.
