Three middle school students have been gaining a lot of praise recently.
These basketball players stood out by coming to defend a young girl who was being bullied during the game. Some disrespectful members of the audience weren’t quite interested in the game but instead thought it would be fun to bully a young girl.
Scooter Terrien, Chase Vasquez, and Miles Rodriguez noticed that the fans were mocking one of the cheerleaders. Desiree Andrews was the girl they were making fun of. Desiree is a victim of Down Syndrome. Desiree was doing her own thing when the squad was following the routine. This didn’t go well with some of the kids in the audience. That is when the players decided, enough was enough.
Instead of turning a blind eye, they took matters in their own hand. The players walked off from the court in the middle of the game to solve the issue. The players said that they were mad and they asked their sports director to talk some sense into the kids sitting in the audience. Their generous act seemed to have caught quite a few eyes.
Cliff Andrews, Desiree’s father, was so moved by the gesture that tears started flowing down his eyes. He thanked the eighth graders for their act of kindness. Cliff revealed that the television show “Glee”, was what inspired Desiree to get into cheerleading. In the television show, a character who also suffers from Down syndrome is a cheerleader.
Since the incident, a good nurturing relationship has groomed between the basketball players and Desiree. They occasionally step into her class and honor her by calling the gym as D’s House. The school’s director revealed that they were actually considering of making a banner with “D’s House” written on it and hanging it in the gym.
This incident has spread across a message of inclusion and kindness. The heartwarming gesture will increase the spirit of the students in the school. Desiree gets the opportunity of high-five the athletes before the game begins.
The young generation believes that God created them as equals and no one should be made fun of or treated differently. It’s great that our future is in the hands of such broad-minded students.
