Barbie released a new video about white privilege and racial injustice, and it quickly went viral.
In the new episode of ‘Barbie Vlogs,’ her friend Nikki opened up about how she was unfairly treated on many different occasions.
“So, there is a huge movement going on. People, millions of people across the world are standing up to fight against racism,” Barbie said.
“And they’re doing this because too often, and for such a long time, people have been treated unfairly. And in some cases, even hurt by others because of the color of their skin,” she continued.
Mattel said in a statement to CNN: “Barbie is championing gender equality to help close the racial injustice barrier girls face through the Dream Gap and this is one way the brand is addressing it.
“The goal of [this] episode is to help girls to understand that there is a huge movement going on in the fight against racism, why people are marching together and the importance of reading and learning more about Black history.”
The company added: “We hope that families watch this together and leverage the brand to discuss a really tough topic with a young child and hope it spurs many more conversations on how girls can support one another, especially leading up to International Day of the Girl this weekend.”
One Twitter user wrote: “This is for kids right? If so then it’s great that they teach kids this stuff at a young age because it’s important.”
Another wrote: “barbie vlogs is acc so nice to watch and I love how theyre using such a “controversial” character too because kids would get teased sm for liking barbie because she was too perfect or girlie or wtv and to see them use a character like that to bring awareness is really nice.”
