Barbecues are as part of American culture as apple pie.

A barbecue is one of the few places where a low-level employee can rub elbows with a company’s CEO while wearing casual clothes. But one trucker took it to the next level by building a humongous barbecue pit on wheels that can feed thousands.

Watch him discuss his creation here:

Terry Folsom puts a capital T on being a true Texan because his special mobile barbecue pit will have people enjoying barbecues for days, perhaps even weeks, at a time. Folsom has been a trucker for three decades. He bought the Peterbilt 379 extended hood that formed the basis of the barbecue pit brand-new back in 1997.

But it’s not the cab that makes the vehicle special but the contraption that’s behind it. At 76 feet, it’s the largest barbecue pit in the world. Folsom has always like smoking meat so being able to barbecue a lot of them seems like a no-brainer for him. It was certainly a way for him to make his passions come to life while making it fun for everyone.

The truck itself weighs 22,000 and the trailer it’s pulling is around 80,000 pounds. Folsom needed 6 months to throw this thing together and now that it’s a reality, he can now barbecue anywhere from 8,000 to 12,000 pounds of meat. And to top it all off, the Lone Star State is prominently displayed at the smoker located on the rear of the trailer. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that that’s a LOT of meat.

The video features Folsom together with his family and a couple of other chefs as they host a big cookout for the local first responders. It’s a fantastic way to show their gratitude to the men and women who put their lives on the line for the sake of others.

In order to start cooking, the massive pit needs about two-and-a-half hours to warm it up enough to the correct temperature. Because the whole thing weighs so much and is so long, whenever it’s moving around it needs a team of escort vehicles as well as a lot of patience.

But it’s definitely worth the wait to get this big baby going because where else can you claim that you ate from a barbecue pit that can feed thousands? In fact, Folsom has performed charity work during emergencies, feeding up to 5,000 people each day. That’s certainly a feat that Jesus himself would be proud of.
