The Brazilian Supreme Court has overruled the ban on Netflix’s ‘offensive’ comedy movie in which Jesus Christ is depicted as a gay man.
After more than 2 million people signed the petition to have ‘The First Temptation of Christ’ removed because they believed their beliefs were being attacked, Judge Benedict Abicair of the Court of Rio de Janeiro ordered Netflix to pull the 46-minute movie.
Following the ban on the movie, however, the Supreme Federal Court overturned the ban and ruled in favor of Netflix.
“We are not neglecting the relevance of respect for the Christian faith (as well as all other religious beliefs or their absence),” the Court’s president, Dias Toffoli, wrote according to the report of Brazilian outlet Agencia Brasil.
“However, it should not be assumed that a humorous satire has the power to undermine the values of the Christian faith, whose existence has been for more than two thousand years.”
In the Netflix Christmas-edition comedy movie, the creators depicted Jesus as a homosexual man, an act that sparked outrage among Christians.
“Jesus, who’s hitting the big 3-0, brings a surprise guest to meet the family. A Christmas special so wrong, it must be from comedians Porta dos Fundos,” the film’s description reads.
Following the movie’s release, over 2 million people have signed the petition demanding that Netflix removes the controversial video from its platform.
Despite the backlash, however, Porta dos Fundos, the production company in question, have struck back at the petitioners and said they have no intention of apologizing.
“Porta dos Fundos values artistic freedom and humor through satire on the most diverse cultural themes of our society and believes that freedom of expression is an essential construction for a democratic country,” they wrote.
