A Chicago police officer in Englewood found a 4-month-old puppy in a plastic bag near a dumpster.
He took him out of the bag and saw wounds.
He placed the terrified dog in the backseat of a car and took him to the Animal Welfare League.
The dog was later named Mr. Riley.
Animal Welfare League shared the heartbreaking story of Mr. Riley on its Facebook page:
‘Mr. Riley, a “bait baby” who was found in a plastic bag, inside the garbage can. Police say the puppy was used as a teaching device to train dogs to fight. This puppy is fighting for his life, suffering from puncture wounds all over his face and body.’
Mr. Riley was used as a bait dog to teach older dogs to fight. The marks on his body are due to the fighting with the older dogs.
President and veterinarian, Linda Estrada, said: “This little guy was raised as bait.”
“I believe that when people can do something to a harmless puppy or kitten, what can they do to a human? Don’t make a profit on them, find another way to make a living, but not this,” she said.
Animal Welfare League recently updated Mr. Riley’s well-wishers. It wrote on its Facebook page:
‘Mr. Riley is slowly recovering. It has been a little over a month and he is looking adorably good these days. He is still in need of medical care, but he thrives to survive is inspirational to us all. According to his foster mom, he loves to snuggle. He is almost fully housetrained and knows the sit & come commands. Mr. Riley enjoys playing outside with the other dogs he stays with.’
Mr. Riley will be put for adoption once he is completely healthy.
