As the doctors ruled back in 2017, the emergency procedure had to be carried out immediately after the diagnosis to save the mother’s life and give the baby a fighting chance.

Following the emergency C-section, Jessica and her husband Kaio were told that their baby son, also named Kaio, only had a ten percent chance to survive after being born at 23 weeks weighing just 15 oz or 435 grams.

Despite the grim prognosis, little Kaio kept on surprising his parents and the doctors while fighting for his life in an incubator designed to replicate the womb.

Following nearly five months of uncertainty and complications, Kaio was finally strong enough to go home in his parents’ arms.

“At no point in my mind was I willing to give up on our little boy. I’d been in so much pain over the last 72 hours but what kept me going was holding on to the belief that he’d be okay,” Jessica recalled.

“The C-section took about an hour, and they had to use general anesthetic to perform the surgery. When I woke up I was really confused, and the doctors explained that Kaio was alive but weighed just 435 grams.”

She added: “They even invited my husband in so we could share what they thought would be our first and last moments with him in case he didn’t make it. But, that thought hadn’t even crossed our mind, and we were determined to save him.”

Though the doting mom-of-three now knows none of it was her fault, she admitted she was initially feeling responsible for her baby’s condition because of the complications that were going on inside her body.

“It was the hardest time of our lives, but that feeling of bringing him home was indescribable,” Jessica added.

“Walking through our front door with him in our arms it seemed like everything was right in the world – we are truly grateful.”

Now, four years after the emergency C-section, little Kaio is doing better than ever and has grown into a happy young child.
