A 1-year-old baby passed away and his parents suffered severe burns after they got trapped by a wildfire in Washington.
Jamie and Jake Hyland and their son were fleeing their property when they got trapped by the Cold Springs Fire.
The family’s abandoned vehicle was spotted on the side of the road before rescue teams found the couple on the banks of the Columbia River. Sadly, baby Uriel passed away.
Jake, 31, and Jamie, 26, were transported to Three Rivers Hospital before they were airlifted to a hospital in Seattle.
According to a GoFundMe page set up by their loved ones, Jamie suffered burns covering 50 percent of her body while Jake was burned on 25 percent of his body.
A relative wrote: “They are both still critical at this point, but Jamie is more so than Jake. They have significant injuries and a long road ahead of them. Please keep them in your prayers.”
The fire that started near Omak has ripped through over 163,000 acres. While the cause is still unclear, Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said baby Uriel’s death will be labeled a homicide if it is arson.
“It would be treated as a homicide, if it were to be determined to be a human-caused, criminal fire,” Hawley said. “That’s the way we’re investigating this at this point, because if we don’t collect everything at this point, we can’t go back and do that.”
The sheriff added that baby Uriel’s death was one of the most tragic wildfire deaths he has seen.
“The death of a one-year-old doesn’t even compare to when we reach our adulthood and we have choices to be places,” he expressed.
“To even be talking about the death of a one-year-old is just devastating.”
