A baby that was just one day old has passed away after being mauled by a family dog in a vicious attack.
The tragic incident took place in Hamilton, New Zealand, where a one-day-old baby boy was rushed to the hospital after reportedly getting mauled by a Rottweiler.
According to the reports, the attack took place at a family home in the Enderley suburb on Sunday night.
As the spokesperson for the New Zealand Police confirmed in a statement to Daily Mail Australia, the baby has passed away following the horrific attack.
According to the reports, the newborn was being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital after being transported to the clinic by St Johns Ambulance. Sadly, the one-day-old passed away overnight.
As Karen, one of the family’s neighbors, alleged, the Rottweiler appeared to attempt to bury the baby after grabbing the newborn while the mother was busy using the toilet.
Following the attack, the animal control service of the Hamilton City Council seized the dog responsible for the baby’s death. As of this writing, the officials have not yet decided if the animal will be put down or not.
“Staff collected the dog and it is now secured at the council’s animal control facility. Further decisions regarding the animal will be informed by the ongoing police investigation,” Susan Stanford, the council’s animal control manager, explained.
“This is a traumatic time for all involved and our thoughts are with the families and individuals involved.”
