A 5-month-old baby girl has passed away after being given a ‘homemade remedy’ to keep her safe from coronavirus.
According to local reports in the Dominican Republic, the youngster’s 7-year-old sister and parents were rushed to hospital after drinking turtle blood recommended by a Haitian witch doctor.
Sadly, the little girl was already lifeless when they arrived at Rosa Duarte Hospital in Comendador, a municipality in the Elias Pina province. Her family members are ‘serious but stable,’ according to reports.
Hospital director Dahiana Volquez said: “These types of cases are caused by people who think these drinks can have curative qualities, but can end up being deadly.”
The 5-month-old Haitian is said to have died on Sunday but details about her death became public two days later. It is unclear if she lived in the Dominican Republic or in the poverty-stricken former French colony.
One internet user commented: “Poor little mite never had a chance. Wish there was world-wide regulation to halt meddling with wild animals.” Another wrote: “Poor child. What were his parents thinking. This isn’t the stone age. Though this makes me wonder.”
In 2012, four kids from the same family passed away in Haiti after receiving treatment from a witch doctor.
An official from the Marbial town was quoted saying the ‘doctor’ and his brother claimed the children were possessed by a demon and tried to get rid of the devil.
As of May 28, there are 1,174 cases of coronavirus in Haiti with 33 fatalities. Dominican Republic has 15, 723 confirmed cases and 474 deaths.
There are more than 5.69 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 worldwide and over 355,000 fatalities.
